3 Tips for Taking Amazing Fall Photos of Your Kids This Fall

Being that Fall is the most beautiful time of year to be outdoors in New Mexico, it is also the most beautiful time of year for taking photos! As a New Mexico Photographer specializing in portraits for families, children, and pets, I offer professional portrait services, but as a mom, I also take photos just for fun of my kids, and I love to share my knowledge with other moms!

In this post, I share three simple tips for taking fun fall photos of your kids this year, and the best part is, it can be done with any camera- even a phone!

  1. Find a Leaf Pile!

I took my kids to play at the park recently, I noticed a huge pile of leaves accumulated on the sidewalk across the street. We could hardly resist running over to play in it, and of course, you know I had to snag a picture.

Try it for yourself!

Capture your kids jumping, tossing, and rolling in the leaves and the results are sure to be nothing but fun!

2. Take Advantage of the Last of The Wildflowers

I know that wildflowers and fall don’t really go together in other parts of the country, but in New Mexico, they go hand in hand. The balmy warm days in October and Early November bring out a brilliant display of Asters and Sunflowers- you just have to find them. I found this patch of purple asters growing in the desert grassland behind my home in Early October, and they served as the perfect backdrop!

Pro Tip: If you have a DSLR or Mirrorless camera with a long-ish lens (85mm or greater), try having your kids stand behind the flowers and shooting with them in the foreground like I did in this image.

3. Get on Their Level

GET LOW! Kids are always interacting with the world around them in really beautiful way. When I photography my kids, I almost always end up laying on the ground. It sounds crazy, but I have found that it’s almost like joining their world and seeing everything through their eyes. Get down on their level and you’ll be amazed at the difference in the photos.
