3 Tips for Being in More Photos with Your Kids

I was looking through my Google Photos archive the other day, reminiscing over years gone by when I realized something startling: because I was the one taking the pictures, I don’t exist in many of them.

There are huge chunks of my life where I don’t exist in any photographs beyond the occasional selfie or poorly timed photo taken by my husband where my mouth is full of food or my eyes are half closed.

Upon realizing this, I summoned my wits, gathered my children, and made them take a photo with me- an actual, intentional, nice photo.

And, I vowed to make a bigger effort at existing in photographs with my children so that they can remember me in these beautiful moments decades from now. They deserve that. And, I deserve it, too. Every mom deserves it.

Here’s my plan for existing in more photographs:

  1. Ask for Help

I know if can be hard to remember in the moment, but but when you’re at a fun family outing, on vacation, or even just at the park on a nice day with your children, ask someone to take your picture. It could be your spouse, a friend, or even a kind stranger. Just ask. It only takes a few seconds to pose for a photo with your family and snap a shot, and you’ll be so glad you did in the end!

  2. Be Intentional

Day to day life can be hectic, and sometimes it can be difficult to remember to ask someone to take our picture, especially when we are focused on being present and enjoying the moment. That is why I have found it helpful to plan photos ahead of time and make it intentional. For example, I set a date on my calendar for photos, and I set expectations with my family ahead of time. I communicate to them how important it is to me that we have photos together, and they are happy to give me a little bit of their day once or twice a year to make that happen.

  3. Hire a Professional

Because it can be so difficult to DIY family photos, I highly recommend hiring a professional at least once per year to create a family portrait for you. A photo where everyone is posed to look their best with good lighting is something that I think everyone should have, and as a mom, it’s priceless. If you’re like me, and the photos your husband takes of you are less than flattering, professional photos are worth their weight in gold. Trust me on this one!

One thing I can tell you for sure is that you will never regret prioritizing existing in photographs with your family. You deserve to exist in photographs and to have beautiful photographs to treasure in your home. Every mom deserves it!
