Tips for Your Photo Session in Albuquerque, New Mexico

As a photographer working in the Albuquerque area, I know a thing or two about how to plan a safe and successful photo session in the Metro Area. In this short article, I’ll be sharing a few safety tips for planning a family photo session in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Be Alert, Stay Safe.

It’s no secret that Albuquerque has a high crime rate. Because of this, it’s important to take safety into account when planning your session and to be alert. Here are a few tips to help keep you safe:

  1. Don’t hire a random photographer or answer a model call for a photographer advertising on Craigslist or Facebook without vetting them first. Check to make sure they have a legitimate website, look at examples of their work, check for customer reviews, and ask to do a Zoom call or meet them for coffee to discuss your session before booking. This can help you get a feel for the person and make sure they really are who they say they are and not a predator trying to reel you into an unsafe situation.

  2. Be careful of scammers and creeps and look out for sketchy business practices. For example, prices that are too cheap or businesses who take cash only or insist on PayPal “friends and family” payments may not be legitimate businesses and may just take your money and run. Also, be leery of “model calls.” Photographers often conduct model calls to test new props or create promotional photos for their businesses or to build up their portfolio, but unfortunately there are creeps out there who buy cameras to lure in women with the promise of free photos or a modeling career. Be cautious in these situations and trust your instincts.

  3. When planning a location for your session, try to choose a public place where there will be other people around and be sure to bring someone with you. Avoid secluded hiking trails, wilderness areas, or private homes. Good options to consider that are safe are Tingley Beach, UNM Duck Pond, or Oldtown.

  4. When the time comes to meet your photographer for the first time, practice the buddy system and let loved ones know where you are going and how long they should expect you to be gone before going to meet someone for the first time. During your photo session, don’t leave valuables in your car, and don’t turn your back on unsecured personal items. And, remember to always trust your instincts. If something feels off or too good to be true, it probably is.

  5. If you feel uncomfortable at any point, leave. Don’t stick around if things don’t feel right. Your safety is more important than photos.
