What to Bring for your Dogs Photo Session

So you booked a photoshoot for your dog and you’re super excited, but now you’re wondering, “what should I bring?”

As a professional dog photographer, I have compiled a list of helpful items for you to bring to your pup’s photo session to ensure everything goes as smoothly as possible.

  1. Collar and leash
Even though most pet photos look as if the dog is posing off-leash, the truth is, most professional dog photographers are actually posing the dog with a leash and then using photoshop to remove it in the editing process. Keeping your dog on a leash throughout the session will ensure your dog is as safe as possible, and that he stays put for each pose.

  2. Bandanas or other adorable doggie clothing items
An easy way to add a little polish to your dog’s photos are to include a spiffy bandana or scarf around their neck or put them in an adorable sweater for a few shots. (Dollar Tree is one of my favorite places to buy festive scarves for this purpose).

  3. Collapsible water dish and water
Water is essential, especially if your session is outdoors. Silicone collapsible bowls are my personal favorite, because they can be easily clipped to a bag with a carabiner, so they are never left behind.

  4. Favorite treats or reward items
Photographers will often have treats and noise makers on them to get your dog’s attention, but no one knows your dog like you. Be sure to bring their favorite treats or other reward items to ensure they stay highly motivated and focused throughout their photo session.

  5. Face wipes for boogies
If your dog has a tendency to get eye boogies, be sure to bring along some face wipes. Ask your groomer if you’re not sure which to purchase.

  6. Dog brush or comb (for more fluffy or long-haired dogs)
If your dog is on the fluffier side, you’ll want to bring a brush or comb to help keep their coat free of sticks and grass throughout the session.

  7. Lint roller (for yourself)
If you plan on posing for a few photos with your dog, be sure to bring a lint roller to get all of the puppy glitter off of your clothes!
